Type 1 Oregon

T1D Buddy Camp is the primary program of Type 1 Oregon, a 501(c)3 public charity formed in early 2018 to support the kids, teens, and families in our T1D community with programs and outreach. Originally founded in 2014 as On Belay TYpe 1 Diabetes Camp, with Camp Tamarack's On Belay TY Foundation as our fiscal sponsor, we are pleased to be offering another session of T1D Buddy Camp on August 17–20, 2025. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and opt in to our email list to stay up-to-date on current activities.

Our Leadership and Board

Dr. Eden Miller

Dr. Miller, an Osteopathic board-certified Family Practitioner, received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Returning to the Northwest, she completed her residency in Family Practice at East Moreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Recently completing her certification in Obesity Management, she is the founder of Diabetes Nation a nonprofit organization, and CEO of Diabetes and Obesity Care LLC where she practices with her husband Dr. Kevin Miller in Bend.

Dr. Miller has cultivated a special interest in diabetes, after contracting type-1 diabetes while in medical school. Out of that personal experience, her practice has extended into a subspecialty in diabetes care. An impassioned speaker, Dr. Miller has given over 1250 lectures in the field of Diabetes to health care providers and patients alike, on subjects such as Diabetes Management, CGM Technology, Insulin Pump Therapy, Obesity and Metabolism intervention, Clinical Research, and Healthcare Policy. Her adage for care is that she “only succeeds as a provider if she turns patients into experts on their own disease”.

Dr. Miller believes that a “physiologic patient individualized approach to diabetes intervention is crucial to success. She feels if our nation is to triumph over the ravages of diabetes, a collaborative effort; unhindered by fear of personal scrutiny, and barriers for effective treatment need to be removed”. For her, Diabetes and Obesity Care provides the foundational model to impact the people that represent this disease and begin the process of restoring hope back to their lives.

Angelina Mingus

Angelina has worked as a Bend LaPine school nurse for the last 20 years and has developed a love for empowering Type One kids and families in the school system.  She came to Buddy Camp years ago as a volunteer and knew instantly these were her people and her passion.

Outside of school nursing she loves spending time with her husband, three grown children and two granddaughters. She also runs a business - Bend Beer Burros - attending local events with her mini donkeys.  Gardening, party planning and making people smile are her favorite hobbies.

Sandy Clawson, DVM

Sandy's son, Aden, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 22-months old. Since that time, she has been seeking ways for the family to thrive while managing T1D.  Sandy joined the board of the T1D Buddy Camp in 2022 in order to advocate for all kids with T1D and give them the opportunity to experience the joys of summer camp. Her husband and she are also active participants in the Breakthrough T1D Ride community. Sandy is passionate about veterinary outreach and being with her family outdoors.

Kacey Conyers

Kacey is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. She has over a decade of experience working with patients living with diabetes. She is passionate about empowering people to live full lives while simplifying their diabetes management routine. Kacey has served as a medical volunteer and board member since 2022.

Laura Glover

Laura was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 9. Her biggest support team is her husband, Chris, and her daughter, Marlowe (and dog, Lucy). As the manager of Sunrise Physio since 2021, she has enjoyed helping patients navigate their care and insurance with a rapidly growing team of providers.

She grew up going to T1D overnight camp in Oklahoma where all campers and counselors had t1d. She made lifelong friends at diabetes camp. After moving to Bend 16 years ago, Laura has dedicated much of her time to connect the t1d community from riding bikes to Walks to advocating on Capitol Hill for legislation to help the diabetes community. Joining the Type 1 Oregon Board to help others connect through Buddy Camp has been a full circle moment to  inspire other kids to find their community within type 1 diabetes while at camp.

Mark Speck

As a teacher and T1D coach, Mark grew up in Bend, Oregon and has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since he was 10. Mark feels like it is truly special to support kiddos—who remind him of his younger self—by empowering them to confidently manage their diabetes. In his free time, he loves chasing after his two daughters and exploring the great outdoors with his wife, Caitlin.

Anne Gibson

Anne helped co-found what is now known as T1D Buddy Camp back in 2014 and served as board president of Type 1 Oregon until 2024. After her daughter was diagnosed with T1D in 2002, she joined the local T1D support group, then served on the Central Oregon JDRF Council, as walk chair multiple times, and on a parent/coffee support group for several years. Anne has worked as a graphic designer for arts, educational, and non-profit clients and is now a member artist at Tumalo Art Co.

Maya Kimmel

Maya’s journey with type 1 diabetes has been going strong, stretching over two continents for close to four decades now! Diagnosed as a child, diabetes was once a source of pain and struggle, but over time, with a long and slow process of acceptance, it became a motivating factor in seeking better treatments and management styles. These eventually led to building a local and international community of people with T1D and their caregivers who share this common goal. With a strong background in traditional art making, a visual designer, a great outdoors, art, film, music, and culture enthusiast based in the Pacific Northwest, Maya shares a home with a supportive husband and their cat, Cheesecake.

Dr. Kevin Miller

Kevin, an Osteopathic board-certified Family Practitioner, received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1995. He accompanied his physician wife to the Pacific Northwest following the completion of his residency training at Cuyahoga Fall General Hospital in Ohio. He is the co-founder of Diabetes Nation a non-profit organization and co-founder of Diabetes and Obesity Care where he practices part-time with his wife Dr. Eden Miller in Bend, Oregon.  Dr. Miller has cultivated a special interest in diabetes, health and exercise, and disease prevention.

An experienced clinician and leader, Dr. Miller’s involvement has included service to the state as a board member and president to Oregon’s Osteopathic medical association, Oregon’s rural health coordinating council member, a founding member of the Bryan Institute of Physician Leadership, and recently completed his fellowship in Health Care Policy. He currently serves on the American Diabetes Association Primary Care Committee. Dr. Kevin Miller believes Diabetes and Obesity Care provides the foundational model to identify disease risk, improve health, reduce complications, and impact the financial burdens chronic medical conditions place on our world.
